Chapter 22

Help Yourself

SARINA

“I don’t understand why she’s helping us,” I say, pacing in front of Lock’s bed.

I pick at the neckline of the dress I’m wearing. I hate human clothes and would much prefer to go naked, but the vet doctor told me I have to wear clothes if I want to blend into town. I have no desire to blend into anything, but I did as she asked because Thorny told me to.

In the absence of my mate, I need another shifter to help me navigate the human world, a scary, noisy place filled with curious onlookers. I trust Thorny because Lock trusts him, even if he’s a bird.

“She’s a healer,” he says as though that explains everything.

“Like a witch,” I say knowingly. “But I still don’t understand. Witches aren’t known for their compassion. They charge a steep price for their healing services and sometimes their potions are more like hexes.”

“She’s not a witch.” Thorny is perched on a chair, his legs crossed. He’s wearing a pair of shorts and a shirt that the vet doctor gave him. She apologized for the items being women’s clothes, but Thorny simply thanked her for her kindness.

“There’s a lot you don’t understand, she-wolf.”

I bare my teeth at him. “Are you calling me stupid?”

He rolls his eyes and shakes his head at me. “You chose to run around as a dog for two hundred years. You missed a lot during that time.”

I shrug and nod toward Lock. “Doesn’t seem like I missed anything worthwhile. The machines are trying to kill us.”

“They aren’t trying to kill us, they’re here for our convenience. If you hadn’t run in front of that truck, Lock wouldn’t have had to save your life, and he wouldn’t have been in danger. Cars were created to allow us to travel faster.”

“I don’t even know what a car is!” I snap in frustration.

“That’s my point exactly,” he says smugly.

“You are calling me stupid!”

Before Thorny can answer my accusation another voice weighs in. “He’s not calling you stupid.” Thorny and I look to the bed where Lock is awake and trying to sit up. “He wouldn’t be that stupid.” Lock’s gaze stabs Thorny. “He knows what I’d do to him.”

Thorny grins in relief and says, “Just trying to get you out of that bed.”

“By insulting my mate?”

“Yeah!” I say, edging toward Lock. “By insulting his mate?”

Lock’s hand snakes out and grasps my wrist, dragging me toward the bed. I don’t resist and he keeps pulling until I’m forced to sit next to him. He releases my wrist and wraps his big hand around my head, dragging my face to him. “You are a stupid wolf,” he says, his voice dropping into an intimate growl that sends shivers racing down my spine. “The next time you do something so reckless as to run onto a road, I will leash you and chain you to my side for the rest of your natural life.”

I lick my lips as I drown in his beautiful hazel gaze.
